I started using the app a few weeks back. I try to always limit the length of my browsing sessions to avoid losing too much time.

I also have dedicated accounts for different types of content (movies and shows, language learning, parenting, history, etc.) so that I still maintain some kind of focus.

Also the Revanced version helps with no ads and limited tracking compared to the original version.

The best would be a Fediverse alternative, I know there is https://goldfish.social/ but it still seems in an early stage, hopefully it will get more mature in the future.

Definitely, however it seems that nowadays even with alternative clients Twitter and Facebook don’t even have that much content to share

OMG thank you for the tip about revanced. I have been so sick of the ads. Almost every other video is an ad.

Sure, it just isn’t worth it compared to any of the other options.

Discovery of movies is more likely to be in depth anywhere else.

Dunno about TV shows, but for new shows, there’s lemmy C/s that are good enough to improve on better than word of mouth, and offer a disturbing lack of tracking and metrics scanning by default.

Music wise? Nah, revanced YouTube is miles better than tiktok, and any of the dozens of music forums or C/s is going to be as well.

It’s good there’s a revanced patch to kill tracking, but I’m dubious about the quality of discovery.

Which shows are not TV? Genuinely asking as usually for me shows are TV (or Netflix or whatever). Do you mean more like Broadway style musicals? In any case, do you have any recommendations? I’m mostly active on !moviesandtv@lemm.ee but that’s TV

Yeah, tv shows. And that’s usually the best place, over at lemm.ee. Well, the best on lemmy as a whole. You can usually build a decent mastodon # list and have a feed that serves just as well, but it isn’t as quick and easy as lemmy (imo) because it’s hashtag driven

I’m not able to do much in the way of musical theater, so I avoid forums for it unless there’s a reason. Can’t handle sitting in a theater any more. Not that we ever got many close enough to go to in the first place lol.

Yeah it does recommend some movies pretty regularly over and over then a new movie will start getting pushed. Move of the time they are actually good recommendations.

Believe it or not Instagram is as well. I don’t use it anymore but when I did my algorithm definitely fed me new music, comedians, etc on the regular that I otherwise wouldn’t have known about.

It is a tool, like Lemmy or any other platform is.

If an education specialist creates some content there, and references established research to back up their claims, what is the issue?

A niche example is multilingual parenting, where there are very interesting people debunking stereotypes on teaching your child two languages at the same time

it’s bringing us first-hand accounts from struggles around the country and around the world. it’s the reason we had first hand footage of what was really happening in palestine. you get updates from the front lines in Ukraine faster than the news does because you’re following the javelin gunner that made the shots. it’s the only reason I know what’s going on in the country of Georgia right now, it’s the only reason I know that there still finding whatever polyvinyl chemicals in the soil of East Palestine Ohio. it’s probably going to serve you dancing girls at first, but once it gets to know your tastes, you’ll be served videos from archaeologists, biologists, artists and professional divers that have retired to a Caribbean island, who take you along as a member of their team gets the bends through the whole process.
