I’m holy fool
Same here. It’s simply not as active as Reddit, obviously. But I found that I was wasting way too much time on Reddit anyway. Infinity was still working for free this whole time, which was the 3pa I used for years, but I still deleted it about a week ago. My sub feed was way less active and the all page was even worse than usual with 80% just aita kind of text posts. I’m on lemmy maybe 30 minutes a day, but that’s a good thing for me.
I tried out ubuntu about as long ago as you did, and for some reason I couldn’t get the internet to work. But because this was before smartphones, I had to boot back into windows, look up a possible solution, write it down, boot back into ubuntu, try it, didn’t work, rinse and repeat. After 2 hours I just gave up and went back to windows. It’s probably way easier now, but I’m still hesitant to give it another try.
I’ve never had a car but am considering it for the first time in my life, at least temporarily. My upcoming internship is at a school in a relatively rural village, and it’s technically under the 1.5 hours travel time my college promises, but only by 10 minutes. Compared to the travel time by car which is 35-45 minutes depending on the time of day. Even in a country as dense and non-car friendly as the Netherlands it still sucks ass to get anywhere more rural without a car.
I moved into one of these buildings about 1.5 years ago and it’s indeed awesome. We also have no gas and tons of solar panels on the roof so last year with the insane energy prices in the whole of Europe I spend €2,83 for all my energy including heating for 8 months, and I’m easily cold so I always have the heating on. The only problem is as you say to get rid of heat in summer, but they opted for smaller windows than is standard so less heat is getting in in the first place. And because of the great insulation you also have pretty much no traffic noise from outside. The only complaint I have is that the mechanical ventilation can get quite loud when it’s windy outside, but the benefits are so overwhelming I can’t be that bothered by it.
Yeah. To me it’s not even a fun philosophical exercise like thinking about what came before the big bang or if there is anything ‘outside’ of the universe. I feel like it’s a debate from before modern physics. Like, 500 years ago there was a lively debate on the matter of free will in a religious context. And I guess the only way to still believe in free will and its contradiction with the laws of nature is when you believe in God. But for everyone else it’s just so damn obvious free will can’t exist and it’s just human ego wanting to pretend we have control. ‘Free will doesn’t exist’ is as obvious and unimpactful of a fact to me as 2+2=4.
Cool so you have awareness of and/or control over the quantum particles that make up the baryons that make up the matter of your brain? No? Then you don’t have free will.
There’s also a third group of people who find the absence of free will neither comforting nor terrifying, but just don’t give a fuck. The absence of free will is just a simple fact, and it doesn’t have any impact on my life whatsoever. I’m still doing what I was always gonna do and my brain will still produce the feeling that I’m in control of myself and my life, just like everyone else. I don’t understand what there is to even have feelings about on the matter.
They aren’t
It isn’t? I’m on it right now, works totally fine
I don’t own anything made of silk but I believe you
Yeah, the only thing you gotta be careful with is wool, because that seriously shrinks like crazy with anything over 20°C. Everything else just goes on 30-40°C, good luck.
That assumes you have bought you own house which you can alter. Where I live it’s 60% owns and 40% rents, but the cities, where it’s much warmer and which heat up faster and thus need ac the most, have more renters than buyers. So you’re dependent on whoever you’re renting from to do anything like that.
As much as I also have hope in the next generation, there isn’t a damn thing we can do anymore. If every single human being disappeared right now, the earth would continue warming and experiencing climate change for 100s more years, because of the feedback loops we have set in motion and the fact that the ocean is still dampening some effects, but won’t be able to for long. Our only hope to avert complete disaster, collapse of society and maybe even the extinction of humanity is if we find a way to start pulling massive amounts of CO2 out of the atmosphere ASAP. Carbon neutrality isn’t enough, we need to be carbon negative. If zoomers can get that done, in time, then they’re a whole other fucking class of human. I hope they do, but I think the odds are against them and all of us.
But it is the only one we get to
partake incause
Ftfy
Lmao. We do need ac though, the problem is Europe has a ton of older houses which were build when it was much more beneficial to try and keep warmth in rather than out. And it’s a pain in the ass to retrofit all these houses with ac. I live in a flat which was build about 15 years ago and the difference compared to my previous apartments is enormous. Still no ac, but it’s not needed here because of proper isolation and smaller windows.
Have you tried simply being too poor to ever eat out and being forced to cook everything yourself?
There is more variety for sure, but my point kinda was that most people, men and women, don’t really make full use of the variety there is. Almost everyone dresses kinda dull. Women have easier access to special and colorful clothes than men (although the latter can definitely find some if they look for it) and they do use it a slightly more but actually interesting clothing takes a little willingness to stand out that most people simply do not have. Maybe it’s different in other countries though - where I live conformity and not standing out is woven into every aspect of our culture.
The context is it’s funny
