This is standard for all fossil fuel companies. Spend some money on PR about how they are going to solve climate change with a wonderful sounding project. Put minimal funding towards said project. Cancel project after a year or two with a quiet press release.
As someone who has zero experience hosting anything, what are the benefits of doing this?

I doubt this. Sounds like billionaires are asking their media to write this stuff while they lobby the government to keep their taxes low.
We, the average person, blame the government and deflect our attention away from the billionaires on their boats.
