I love this kind of community in theory, because I love learning about how things work, but I don’t love the posts asking for creature identification. Those are less how things work and more “I need an expert on this geologic region’s fauna” so they seem like completely different topics to me.
I don’t want to see spiders in my feed, but I’m happy to see curious objects. If I block the community due to the spiders, I miss out on the curious objects.
The community averages less than 1 post per day; it’s not like it’s being overrun with animal identification requests, and there’s certainly not enough to warrant a separate community. Maybe just ask for spoiler tags on spiders instead?
It would be better to just call the community “What is this Noun?” because it’s not like Lemmy is super big enough to warrant splitting similar things apart.
Interesting idea.

I personally have no problem with spiders, but can understand how they could be a problem.
One solution would be to try and promote !whatsthisbug@sopuli.xyz, which is an existing but dormant community.
To truly eliminate spiders from this community, an active moderator would be needed to remove posts and direct users to !whatsthisbug@sopuli.xyz. It would also be necessary to convince all those subscribed to this community who are fine with seeing bugs to subscribe to both communities.
Tagging moderators @mykl@lemmy.world and @hesburger@sopuli.xyz for their thoughts, but they seem to have been dormant for a few months.
This is an interesting idea, but I’m not sure how practical or feasible it is.
