Standard of living has been steadily improving in China since the revolution, and it has managed to develop in an overwhelmingly peaceful fashion. China has achieved astounding feats of engineering with projects like cross country high speed rail, and it’s currently leading the clean energy revolution globally.

The people doing human rights violations are the people in the US government. The call is coming from inside the house.

I generally agree, while there is a lot of hype around AI, there is real progress being made as well. The way I see it there are three different paths towards AGI. The first is trying to figure out the algorithms similar kind of problem solving that our brains are doing. This is the approach that’s getting the most attention currently. Another approach is bio-inspired neural nets, where we study how biological systems evolved, and try to copy that. Finally, there’s the evolutionary approach where we could set up a virtual environment, and have the agents evolve within it. We can also use combinations of these techniques in complementary ways.

I’m convinced that we will stumble on what’s involved in building human style intelligence sooner or later, but it’s hard to say how far away we are at the moment. I do think that this will happen within a century tops though, and even that is a blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things.

I guess I’m still within the limit for now, that’s the main thing I want to keep an eye on for a few weeks to see that my data usage is stable. Seems like setting a hard limit on media retention is key. I don’t really want to have to do admin work maintaining my own instance, hence why I’d rather just pay a few bucks a month for somebody else to do it.

Yeah that makes sense, in my case I was a already following a lot of accounts and had a lot of followers, so discoverability wasn’t an issue. I can see how it’s a problem if you’re making a new account though. In that case, it’s better to just join a bigger instance so you can find content.
