I have been with you from your creation now to your grave. You were never really the most popular Reddit app, but you were my Reddit app. I will miss you.

BaconReader was my first Reddit app on Android all the way before there was even an official app. I remember one time the developer sent me some BaconReader stickers in the mail.

I feel sad seeing all of these goodbye posts from these developers that have put so much work into these apps only to have Reddit just spit in their face and not even be willing to negotiate any type of agreement

Are any app developers other than Sync moving to Lemmy? I like that that one will be more of a new beginning than an end.

I really hope so. I haven’t heard of any other than sync. I know the Apollo dev is taking a break and doesn’t have any plans of developing an app right now but I do hope that changes. I can say though that the developers that are making apps for Lemmy right now are very impressive.

Check out https://wefwef.app, it’s an apollo-like web client for Lemmy that you can log in to and use like an app. Your browser should let you install it on your phone like an app (normally you click the menu icon and find the “Install” option but it depends on your browser.

I’ve been using that one also! It’s very impressive for a web client. Pretty much been switching between Memmy and wefwef!

Just logged into my new Lemmy, after also being in the sweet sweet frying pan of 🥓 To see this as basically the first post on my new news feed does feel good to be honest. I hope the migration goes well for us all!

Old Reddit used to be obsessed with bacon. To be fair much of the internet was at that time.

A call sign you could use to identify a redditor in person was to ask “when does the narwhal bacon” with the response “it bacons at midnight”.

Hence where bacon reader derives its name from.

So there was a time where the most common phrase among redditors was “the narwhal bacons at midnight” and during this time redditors were concerned about non-redditors pretending to be redditors to seem cool.

It was less about trying to find posers, and more about trying to find fellows. If you’ve ever played a semi obscure game and then seen someone with a bumper sticker or decal of that game you’d get the picture.

That’s at the whole thing was very silly. Honestly the entirety of the internet at the time was much less serious and dour.

I thought it was to identify the people who didn’t go to the Reddit meet ups… Or was that something to do with waffles and carrots. I never got into the circle jerk side of Reddit

I feel bad for these devs. I’m sure they’ll be fine but some of them have been maintaining their apps for a decade plus. You get attached to your code after that long.

Shit man, BaconReader was the first Reddit app I downloaded. I eventually settled on RiF but this is just sad.

    Fuck spez.

In terms of sheer hours of use, buying the ad-free version of the app 10 or 11 years ago now was probably the best value purchase I’ve ever made. RIP BaconReader, it’s been a wonderful journey. :(

I tried almost all of the Reddit apps over the years but ended up with BR as I found it was the most polished. Thank you to the devs who put so much effort in, sorry to see it go.

So many Reddit apps I’ve never even tried, and yet I feel sad seeing these kinds of posts.

Others used RIF and Apollo, but I was firmly Team BaconReader from the moment I downloaded it a decade ago. I had deleted the application off my phone a few weeks back to help curb the habit, but seeing this now really hammered the nail into the coffin. At least it now has its own send off of sorts with one last update to the Play Store.

On the off chance that they see this, thank you BaconReader devs for 12 years of service!!

I used BaconReader on Android before I used Apollo on iPhone. It was a great app at the time I used it. Yet another app succumbing to corporate greed. Sadge.
